Volunteering is one way we “play our instrument” in the great orchestra of life. It is one way we show up where God has placed us, using our gifts, experiences, relationships, and availability for His purposes.

When we serve, we are not just filling a slot on a schedule. We may be stepping into one of the good works God prepared in advance for us to do. Sometimes that good work is visible and public. Sometimes it is quiet and hidden. Sometimes it is a word of encouragement, a visit, a meal, a prayer, a ride, a gift, a phone call, or simply being present.

But when we fail to show up, something is missing.

Like Richard Stearns said, each of us is like a puzzle piece. No one else has exactly our same story, gifts, connections, life experience, or season of life. God can use all of it. Even retirement is not the end of usefulness. It may be a new season of availability. Richard wrote The Hole in our Gospel.

So the question is not only, “What am I retiring from?” That is, IF you are retiring! Probably a ways away?

The better question may be:

“Lord, what are You inviting me into now?”

There is a season for everything under heaven. There is also a purpose for every season. Ecclesiastes 3:1

So whatever season you are in, do not bury your instrument. Do not hide your song. Ask God where He wants you to serve, encourage, give, pray, mentor, welcome, teach, visit, or help.

Then take the next faithful step.

PLAY ON!
