Practical Insights regarding Linkedin, work and Encouragement for Your Career Search—And Beyond

After more than 20 years of working with job seekers—(Mostly 2000-2005) both individually and in groups—I’ve developed a process that consistently helps people find meaningful work and connect with opportunities through LinkedIn. Here’s a condensed guide based on those experiences, perfect for anyone actively searching for a new job, considering a career change, or seeking a fulfilling volunteer role. After 20 plus years, I believe these 10 steps are still true. Some things never change, just like God’s word found in the Bible.

1. Discover Your Passion

Start by identifying what excites you most. Ask yourself: What motivates you each day? Understanding your interests is the foundation for a satisfying career or volunteer path.

2. Target Organizations That Inspire You

Consider which companies or nonprofits you would love to work with, not just for. There’s a subtle but important difference—working with implies partnership and shared purpose.

3. Research Their Mission and Vision

Explore the organization’s website to learn about their goals and values. This insight will help you align your strengths and aspirations with theirs.

4. Connect with Employees

Reach out to people who work there. LinkedIn makes this easy—don’t be afraid to message, introduce yourself, and build relationships.

5. Meet and Network Creatively

Invite your new connections for coffee or a walk in the park, even virtually if needed. Use your creativity to foster genuine conversations.

6. Understand the Organization’s Challenges

Ask about both short-term and long-term issues the organization faces. Knowing their pain points lets you propose real solutions.

7. Leverage Your Strengths

After taking assessments like StrengthsFinder 2.0, identify your top abilities and think about how you can use them to address the organization’s needs. You are uniquely equipped to make a difference.

8. Embrace Your Uniqueness

No one else brings exactly what you do. Don’t underestimate the value of your perspective, skills, and experience. Remember, You are unique and special with a mission!

9. Go Beyond Job Descriptions

Job postings are often just a starting point. Instead of competing for advertised positions, look for ways to create value—and even your own role—by solving problems the organization may not have realized existed.

10. Create Your Own Opportunity

Use your strengths to craft a position that suits you and the organization. Remember, resumes are just tools; real connections are what lead to opportunities. LinkedIn is invaluable for networking, but success depends on follow-through and persistence.

LinkedIn: A Tool, Not the End Goal

Many people update their profiles only after landing a job, leaving outdated information. Don’t let your profile languish—keep it current, add relevant links, and use LinkedIn to connect with those doing the work you aspire to do.

Volunteer Opportunities: Apply the Same Process

This approach works equally well for finding meaningful volunteer roles. Start with your church or other organizations whose mission resonates with you.

Faith, Providence, and Encouragement

Throughout this journey, remember that anxiety about the future is natural, especially in uncertain times. Lean on faith and trust that providence often guides our paths. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart… and he will make straight your paths.” (Proverbs 3:5-6)

Final Thoughts and Call to Action

If these steps help you, consider sharing them with friends and colleagues. Reach out, start conversations, and support each other in your journeys. The only ones who will be truly happy are those who have sought and found ways to serve, making a difference in the world.

As Zig Ziglar says  “The trail is long, and we won’t arrive at our destination in this life. Still, we’re on the journey with Jesus for the greatest thrill of our lives.

Are you ready to embrace the journey God has designed for you?

Have you ever wondered why you are the way you are? Discover the incredible truth that you are a unique expression of God’s loving design, crafted intentionally and with purpose. Even in moments of loneliness or uncertainty, remember that God created you with care—choosing every detail, gifting you with talents, and weaving together your personality and journey. The Bible reminds us in Isaiah 44:2 and Ephesians 1:4 that you are no accident; you were chosen and shaped deliberately, for a reason that fits perfectly into His divine plan. Your uniqueness is a gift, and your experiences, even the imperfect ones, form an important part of the story God is writing for you. Embrace your precious identity, knowing you are empowered to fulfill the purpose He designed for your life. Find your place in God’s world, put your puzzle pieces together, and shine for His glory!
